End of Life for Common I/O in RDS and welcome to Extreme SSD

As part of our continuously strive by delivering better performance and releasing old technology that doesn’t fit to current market, we are pleasure to announce you of the new performance era in Relational Database Services by disabling Common I/O (low performance) and enabling Extreme SSD as well as offering in the deployment two new concepts like general and dedicated RDS deployments.

The End of Life for Common I/O in Relational Database Service will take effect, as previously announced in the service description, starting from August 1st, 2024.

What must you be aware after August 1st?

  • Common I/O will be not more available for RDS deployment of new instances. Only Cloud SSD and Extreme SSD.
  • Existing instances with Common I/O will remain untouched and will be supported until they are migrated to Ultra High I/O (Cloud SSD) or Extreme SSD storage class.
  • There is only one exception by existing/running instances where a node of type Primary/StandBy/Cluster/Read Replica in that RDS instance set with Common I/O stops working or crashed, than a new restored node will have the same specifications including Common I/O if it was running with Common I/O.
  • By trying to recovery an instance from backup no matter if the backup belongs to a RDS instance with Common I/O storage a Create New Instance will not offer Common I/O and just Cloud SSD and Extreme SSD as backups are not related to storage.

We recommend a migration through Data Replication Service(DRS) using Online Migration Management for MySQL, Data Synchronization for PostgreSQL, and Backup Migration Management for Microsoft SQL. More details and information can be found in this community blog.
